Welcome to Science!
August 23, 2008
Welcome to Madrona Science with Mr. Campbell. Our units of study this year include:
· Diversity of Life
· Cells, Heredity, and Classification
· Weather and Water
· Human Body Systems
In “Diversity of Life” we explore the science of life. The course is presented around ten major topics:
1. What is Life?
2. Introduction to Microscopes
3. Microscopic Life
4. The Cell
5. Seeds of Life
6. Transpiration
7. Plant Reproduction
8. Snails
9. Roaches
10. Kingdoms of Life
We will be immersed in scientific inquiry as you think, design, investigate, observe, relate, and compare science concepts related to this topic exploration.
In “Cells, Heredity, and Classification” we explore the connections between these topics. We will study in depth the DNA found in cells. Heredity will highlight dominant and recessive traits, mitosis, meiosis, and gene mutations. Classification emphasizes levels of classification, dichotomous keys, and the characteristics of the six kingdoms of classification. We will be immersed in scientific inquiry as my students think, design, investigate, observe, relate, and compare science concepts related to this topic exploration.
In “Weather and Water” we explore the complex systems of weather, climate, and seasons. The course is presented around 8 major topics:
1. What is Weather?
2. Where is the Air?
3. Heat Transfer
4. Convection
5. Water in the Air
6. The Water Planet
7. Air Pressure and the Wind
8. Weather and Climate
We will be immersed in scientific inquiry as you think, design, investigate, observe, relate, and compare science concepts related to this topic exploration.
In “Human Body Systems” we explore 3 body systems.
1. The digestive system, during which students trace nutrients as they are processed, absorbed into the blood, and taken to body cells.
2. We will investigate the respiratory and circulatory system. Exploring the process of breathing as well as, how the heart and blood vessels operate.
3. The musculoskeletal system, where students learn about how this system and respiration are related, and get to explore how muscles, bones, and nerves work together.
We will be immersed in scientific inquiry as you think, design, investigate, observe, relate, and compare science concepts related to this topic exploration.
School Success tips for Parents and Students:
Parents:
· Make sure that your student has a quiet focused place to study in the house.
· Establish a routine time and place to do 1-2 hours of homework each night.
· All students should be reading at least 30 minutes every night at home.
· Be Involved! Ask lost of questions, ask to see assignments, check notebooks, and check on grades.
· Agenda: Your student should be writing down all their assignment every day in their agenda. Ask to see it so you can know what they are doing (or not doing!).
· Contact me if you have any concerns about your student’s progress.
Students:
· Come to science class on time.
· Have the following materials every day in class: Pencils/pens, composition book, paper, assignments, and good attitude.
· Stay focused on your work, be respectful of self and others, follow all lab safety guidelines, and do your best.
· Stay healthy, get exercise, lots of sleep, eat a good breakfast and lunch!
