An Overview of our Science Units for 2009-10
August 28, 2009
Welcome to Madrona Science with Mr. Campbell. Our units of study this year include:
Properties of Matter
Catastrophic Events
Force and Motion
Sound and Light
Topics in Astronomy
In “Properties of Matter” we explore the physical science of matter.
This unit introduces students to the idea that matter is everywhere on earth. What is matter? What are its properties, what does it do, and how does it respond? Students will explore a wide variety of matter’s characteristics such as volume changes, the conservation of mass during dissolving or phase changes, and the formation of chemicals.
We will be immersed in scientific inquiry as students think, design, investigate, observe, relate, and compare science concepts related to this topic exploration.
In “Catastrophic Events” we explore the connections in earth science.
This unit introduces students to the big idea of Earth’s naturally occurring catastrophic events. This unit includes a wide variety of opportunities for students to simulate key elemental reactions that occur during these earth events. Students study the topics of earthquakes and volcanoes.
We will be immersed in scientific inquiry as students think, design, investigate, observe, relate, and compare science concepts related to this topic exploration.
In “Force, Motion, and Energy” we learn about gravity, energy, and physics.
This unit draws students’ attention to the constant sources of motion around them. Some motion happens naturally, beyond what human’s control (such as the planets revolving around the Sun). We can create or influence other types of motion (such as bicycle racing). Both these types of motion, natural and designed motions, go largely unnoticed by us, every day. This unit helps students understand why things work the way they always have.
We will be immersed in scientific inquiry as students think, design, investigate, observe, relate, and compare science concepts related to this topic exploration.
In “Sound and Light” we learn about the physics of light.
We will look at the big idea of waves. We discover how they’re made, how they travel, and the capabilities of their forces.
In “Astronomy” we will learn more about stars, planets, and exploring space.
School Success tips for Parents and Students:
Parents:
· Make sure that your student has a quiet focused place to study in the house.
· Establish a routine time and place to do 1-2 hours of homework each night.
· All students should be reading at least 30 minutes every night at home.
· Be Involved! Ask lost of questions, ask to see assignments, check notebooks, and check on grades.
· Agenda: Your student should be writing down all their assignment every day in their agenda. Ask to see it so you can know what they are doing (or not doing!).
· Contact me if you have any concerns about your student’s progress.
Students:
· Come to science class on time.
· Have the following materials every day in class: Pencils/pens, science folder, paper, assignments, and good attitude.
· Stay focused on your work, be respectful of self and others, follow all lab safety guidelines, and do your best.
· Stay healthy, get exercise, lots of sleep, eat a good breakfast and lunch!
