Calorie Calculations

1a        50 grams x (30 degrees Celsius – 100 degrees Celsius)

= - 3,500 calories

1b        The evidence that supports the conclusion of heat lost is the presence of the minus sign.  This means heat is lost in the procedure.

1c        100 grams x (45 degrees Celsius – 80 degrees Celsius)

= -3,500 calories

1d        Mitchell and Landon both lost the same amount of heat.

1e        Both calorie calculations show that 3,500 calories were lost.  These calculations are adequate evidence to support my observation.

The Lungs

1          Which diagram shows the conditions necessary for air to enter the lungs?

The correct picture is D.  This shows that when pressure is low in the lungs and high in the atmosphere outside of the lungs, air will freely move in to the lungs.

Describe Two Human Body Systems that Affect How the Respiratory System Functions

One system:      the circulatory system

The circulatory system interacts with the lungs.  An exchange of gases and wastes occur between these two systems.  Oxygen is drawn into the lungs and enters the circulatory system within the inner respiratory system.  Wastes such as carbon dioxide gas leave the circulatory system and enter the lungs, and is exhaled.  (Basic)

Another system:            the muscular system

The muscular system interacts with the lungs.  A muscle called the diaphragm is a key to breathing.  When this muscle contracts, air is inhaled into the lungs.  When this muscle relaxes, air is exhaled from the lungs.  (Basic)

Deepak’s science investigation

7.         B.         The taller a student is, the more air they can hold in their lungs.

8.         C.        Medicines have been developed to treat asthma.

9.         D.        Filter the air coming into his house.
