Mr Gorney's Classroom
Bi-Monthly Letter # 1.0
8th Math
Weeks Of: Sept 7-21, 2007
Last Week’s Recap
Welcome to the 2007 – 2008 school year. My name is Tom Gorney and I am looking forward to getting to know each of your children over the next few months. This is my way of communicating with you every two weeks. I will ask that your child return the letter to me signed so that I know you have seen it. In this section I will be reviewing what we have done over the past few weeks.
I have asked that the students in 8th grade math purchase a graphing calculator. This calculator will be needed as well in high school and will be appropriate for college courses too. I’ve asked them to get a TI-83 or TI-84. They will cost about $100. The reason I’ve asked them to get this brand of calculator is that the text gives specific directions on how to use these calculators to solve the problems they are working on. If the purchase of this calculator presents a problem or if you have any questions please feel free to contact me. Please make sure the calculators have the student’s name on them.
This Week’s Highlights
In this section of the letter I will let you know what we will be covering over the next few weeks. We will be using the Connected Math series during the year. This program is designed to help prepare your student for the WASL as well as the Integrated Math program that is used in the high schools. The program uses the discovery method of learning using every day activities to help make math real for the students.
For the next couple of weeks the students will be reviewing their skills on creating tables and graphs. During this review they will be learning about linear and inverse variation. We will be connecting this with reading and writing equations.
